Thank you to the more than 200 people who joined us for the 2017 Child Welfare Primer on Feb. 15 and the more than 300 people who attended CASA Day at the Capitol on Feb. 16!

Your CASA spirit made both events an outstanding success and helped spread CASA advocacy from the courtroom to the Capitol! You can check out pictures from both events below. The morning session is for CASA staff, volunteers and board members who plan to attend CASA Day at the Capitol. The training will give you an overview of our legislative priorities and issues you will be discussing with your legislators. It is also a great opportunity to network with other programs and learn about their strategies for legislative visits.

Featuring: Kevin Campbell, Founder of Family Finding

The founder of Family Finding will discuss what he has learned about successful child welfare systems from his extensive work across the U.S. and around the world. He will offer insights into how to move beyond the crisis-oriented culture that has plagued the Texas child welfare system, and shift into a system that is focused on well-being.

2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. |  From Safety to Well-Being: Shifting the Conversation

A panel of experts from across Texas will discuss their perspectives on the issues and challenges that Texas is facing, and how we can shift the conversation from issues of worker and child safety to focus on child and family well-being. Panelists will provide insight into untapped areas of policy and research that can help transform the culture of child welfare into a system that focuses on the best interest of children and families. Presented by: Kevin Campbell, Founder of Family Finding; Dr. Cynthia Osborne, Child & Family Research Partnership; Tanya Rollins, State Disproportionality Manager; Anu Partap, MD, MPH, Director of the Rees-Jones Center for Foster Care Excellence; Facilitated by: Dr. Lynda Frost, Director of Planning & Programs, Hogg Foundation for Mental Health

To wrap up the day, we will hear from the true experts on the Texas child welfare system: those who have personally interacted with it. We will feature a grandmother who provided kinship care for her grandchild, a former foster youth, a biological mother whose child was removed and a foster parent. They will each tell their story and share what they believe is working well in the current system and what they think needs to change in order for it to effectively meet the needs of children and families. CASA Day at the Capitol

The 2017 CASA Day at the Capitol is the day advocates join together, in a shared voice, to advocate for Texas children! Hundreds of CASA advocates from all over the state will fill the state capitol to share their personal stories of advocacy and discuss legislation that can impact the lives of children.

Please note that due to the ever-changing environment at the Capitol, the agenda for this event is subject to change. A draft agenda is available below, and a final agenda, maps, talking points and more will be provided on the day of the event.

7:15 a.m. – 8:00 a.m. | Check-in – Auditorium

Programs are in charge of making appointments with their legislators’ offices. Talking points and a “prep-talk” will be available during the Welcome Presentation at 8:00 a.m. Please note that programs with shared legislative representation should work together to avoid duplicate appointments. To help us keep track of which legislative offices are being visited, please email Legislative Advocacy Coordinator Jennifer Limas-Mota at jlimas@texascasa.org with your confirmed appointments prior to the event.

10:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. | CASA Day at the Capitol Resolution – House Chamber (TBD)

Your efforts to advocate for children deserve recognition! Everyone is invited to hear a resolution declaring February 16, 2017, as CASA Day at the Capitol. Exact time and location will be provided the day of.

11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. | Lunch (if ordered in advance through online registration) – Legislative Conference Center (E2.002)

Grab-and-go boxed lunches that were purchased in advance through online registration will be available for pick up in the LCC. Boxed lunches will NOT be available for purchase onsite. The Capitol Grill is located across from the Auditorium for those who did not purchase a box lunch. Please note that seating in the Legislative Conference Center (LCC) is limited.

11:45 a.m. | Group Photo – 1st Floor Rotunda

Follow Texas CASA staff to the rotunda to take part in a group photo with hundreds of your fellow advocates from across Texas! Details will be announced on the day of.

Legislative Office Visits

Programs are responsible for making appointments with their legislators. If you are a volunteer, please contact a member of your program staff to secure your program’s legislative office appointments. You are encouraged to make your appointments as soon as possible. Wondering who your legislators are? To find out, view this Legislator List Organized by CASA Program.
