House Passes 2 of 3 Major CPS Reform Bills Out of Committee on Same Day as Hearing

On Monday, Feb. 20, Texas CASA spent the day at the Capitol providing testimony during the long day of hearings on House Bills 4, 5 and 6. House Bill 4 by Representative Cindy Burkett is a kinship reform bill, which provides additional monetary support for some kinship caregivers. House Bill 5 by Representative James Frank separates the Department of Family and Protective Services from the Health and Human Services Commission, making it a stand-alone agency. House Bill 6 also by Representative Frank relates to statewide implementation of community-based foster care, and changes access to child care for some populations. You can view archived recordings of the hearings regarding these bills here, and here.

House Bills 4 and 5 were unanimously passed out of committee, while House Bill 6 was left pending. To track these and other important child welfare bills this session, make sure to follow the Texas CASA bill tracker.
