A Conversation with Clergy & CASA

On Jan. 30, Texas CASA hosted A Conversation with Clergy and CASA – a day of listening and learning about how we can engage the faith community to recruit more CASA volunteers to advocate for abused and neglected children in the foster care system. CASA programs represented at the event included Amarillo Area CASA; CASA of Ellis County; Dallas CASA; CASA of Titus, Camp, and Morris Counties; and CASA of El Paso. CASA programs were asked to invite a member of the clergy from their community to the event, and nine diverse representatives joined us.

The agenda, facilitated by Keri McDonald, Recruitment and Retention consultant, was designed with a listening ear in mind to learn about the unique cultures of the churches represented and how to come alongside them in their ministry to the community. DFPS, Fostering Hope, and the Go Project also joined us to share more about the work they’re already doing and to discuss partnering for this effort.

This Conversation laid the foundation for a work group of CASA program representatives and clergy who will meet throughout 2018 to design a faith-based recruitment initiative for the state. We are so excited to continue building on what we learned through this meeting, and better collaborate with communities of faith to make a positive difference in the lives of children in foster care across Texas!
