DFPS Releases Annual Child Maltreatment Fatalities & Near Fatalities Report

On March 2, the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) released its Fiscal Year 2017 Child Maltreatment Fatalities and Near Fatalities Annual Report. The report goes in depth on the causes of child fatality and near-fatality incidents related to abuse or neglect. In 2017, Texas experienced a 22.5-percent drop in child fatalities, down from 222 in 2016 to 172 in 2017. Most deaths were related to drowning, co-sleeping and physical trauma.
