On Jan. 18, 2019, the Texas Supreme Court Children’s Commission hosted a Normalcy Roundtable featuring over 50 participants, including representatives from the CASA network and Texas CASA. The purpose of the roundtable was to discuss the importance of normalcy, barriers to normalcy, and opportunities that exist in the Texas child welfare system to ensure that all children and youth in care experience as normal a life as possible.
The roundtable brought to light that we have much to do in Texas to ensure not only that children have access to normalcy activities and resources, but that our child welfare system promotes a culture of inclusion and belonging for all. Following the roundtable, the Children’s Commission drafted a report that includes a summary of the recommendations from roundtable participants. The report was released on Friday, May 31, and it marks the beginning of a more concerted effort at the Children’s Commission to promote normalcy for all children and youth in care.
