On Feb. 19-20, 2020, Texas CASA hosted the third Volunteer Power Unleashed Summit, an event specifically for volunteer recruiters. The year’s event, “Pursuit of the Peak,” gave recruiters the tools they need to recruit more dedicated and diverse volunteers to advocate for the best interest of children and families involved with the foster care system.
Recruiters from across the state (and nation!) came together to learn new approaches to recruitment and share best practices from their own programs.
“Attendees brought varied levels and types of knowledge, expertise and experience. We had one person who has been with CASA 27 years, and one who just started within the week. We had attendees from Oklahoma, Tennessee, Michigan… all over the U.S.!” said Dennise Jackson, Statewide Recruitment Officer. “With this event, we really try to make sure there is something for everyone.”
On day one, storytelling expert Andy Craig took the recruiters through a workshop to help them perfect their CASA pitch. Then, they heard from presenters about engaging volunteers from diverse communities, recruiting within churches, the volunteer life cycle, and using social media to create awareness and attract volunteers.
Then, on day two, they put their knowledge to the test in the fast-paced, interactive Pursuit of the Peak challenge, and enjoyed learning from and networking with their fellow recruiters. Texas CASA also honored Texas State Senator José Menéndez and Representative Ina Minjarez with the Big Voices for Little Texans Award for their dedication to improving the lives of Texas children and families.
