Texas CASA CEO Vicki Spriggs and Public Policy Fellow Bryan Mares discuss medical advocacy for children in the foster care system in this edition of Conversations with CASA. The two dive into the heightened medical and mental health challenges children in foster care face compared to those not in the system, as well as some of the main takeaways for CASA volunteers and staff from the new Health Advocacy Guide.
Mares joined the Texas CASA team as part of the Hogg Fellowship program and has worked for the past two years on researching the current state of healthcare for children in the foster care system in Texas.
Mares will also be hosting a webinar to help CASA staff and volunteers better understand the mental and physical health services available to children and youth through the STAR Health Medicaid program – covering everything from dental care to medication coverage. The webinar will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 30, from 12-1 p.m.
Conversations with CASA is an online series from Texas CASA that explores current issues and trends affecting child welfare, children and families in foster care and the CASA network. Catch up on other episodes of Conversations with CASA.
