When you hear the term adoption, you may think of the common scenario of a couple or single person adopting a child not related to them by blood. However, there are several types of adoptions, and more adoptions are now occurring within families and extended families including adoption of a nephew, niece, grandchild or stepchild.
What does relative or kinship adoption mean to a child?
- Creating stability and safety with trusted loved ones,
- Keeping siblings together in one placement,
- Remaining connected to parents and other extended family, and
- Avoiding unnecessary lengthy stays in foster care.
