Calling all advocates for older youth! The Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) has funds available to help youth and young adults purchase a car—but the young people need to apply ASAP!
The Preparation for Adult Living (PAL) Program can pay up to $5,500 of federal Pandemic Assistance funds toward the purchase of a car by current or aged-out youth and young adults ages 17-20.
IMPORTANT: The funds are only available through Aug. 31, 2022. It will take time to apply and ensure youth have the required documents. CASA advocates, we need to step up to the plate and help these young people take advantage of this opportunity before it’s too late.
Check out this handout created by the Texas Foster Youth Justice Project for more information, including qualifications, how to apply for the funds and tips for buying a used car.
In addition to the funds available for purchasing a car, federal Pandemic Assistance funds are still available to youth and young adults ages 14-20 through Aug. 31, 2022, for a wide range of needs.
Information about both sets of funds is also available at texasfosteryouth.org/covid-19-resources/.
For more general information about the funds, you can contact the Texas Foster Youth Justice Project at 877-313-3688 or info@TexasFosterYouth.org. Youth and young adults applying for funds need to contact their PAL worker. They can also call the PAL State Office at 512-460-7394.
