88th Legislative Session Update

We are in heading into the home stretch of the 88th Legislative Session. The last day of regular session ends on May 29. The Governor then has until June 18 to sign or veto bills.

With just one month left, Texas CASA’s Public Policy Team has been hard at work advocating on behalf of CASA and testifying on bills that could improve the child welfare system in several House and Senate committees. This session, Texas CASA has been supporting and focusing on legislation that aims to amplify the importance of family preservation, support for kinship caregivers, and safe and stable placements. In addition to our legislative efforts, the Public Policy Team has been holding regular meetings with our Legislative Advocacy Teams across the state to keep the CASA network up to date on important legislative updates as they are happening.

The Texas CASA Bill Tracker is live and consistently updated throughout the 88th Legislative Session. The Bill Tracker is sorted into three categories: Champion Bills, High Priority Bills, and Bills Supported by Texas CASA. As a reminder, this bill tracker does not include every bill Texas CASA is tracking this session. The Public Policy Team has chosen these three categories to provide information about the most relevant and important bills that are related to our legislative priorities. In addition to the Bill Tracker, Texas Legislature Online is another useful resource to receive direct updates about bills and watch the House and the Senate floor and committee livestreams. If you have questions about a specific bill that isn’t on the bill tracker, please reach out to publicpolicy@texascasa.org for information.
