The Latest on CASA Funding

The Appropriations Bill, House Bill 1, is entering the final stages of negotiation. The House and Senate have each passed their proposed budgets. Conference committee members were also appointed, and they have begun the hard work of reconciling the two budget proposals. The conferees include:

Jane Nelson, R-Flower Mound, chairwoman
Joan Huffman, R-Houston
Lois Kolkhorst, R-Brenham
Robert Nichols, R-Jacksonville
Larry Taylor, R-Friendswood

John Zerwas, R-Richmond, chairman
Greg Bonnen, R-Friendswood
Sarah Davis, R-West University Place
Oscar Longoria, D-Mission
Armando Walle, D-Houston

The Texas House of Representatives and the Texas Senate have approved additional funding for CASA programs, but at different levels. The House approved funding for CASA at the full requested amount: an additional $2.25 million in annual funding for CASA programs. The budget passed by the Senate also provided additional funding, but by $1.25 million annually.

Texas CASA’s goal will be to support funding at the level approved by the House during conference committee deliberations. Legislative Advocacy Teams (LATs) reached out to their House members to ask them to maintain the House level of funding for CASA programs. Additionally, LATs contacted their Senate members to ask them to support the House funding level. Texas CASA is grateful to the local programs for their continued support and advocacy on this important issue. Please contact the Public Policy team with any questions at .
