House County Affairs Committee Looking at CPS Problems

The Texas House of Representatives County Affairs Committee, chaired by Houston Representative Garnet Coleman, has begun looking at issues and problems in the child protection system during its interim hearings. Although the committee was not charged with studying this issue by the Speaker, Chairman Coleman is deeply concerned about problems at DFPS. After an initial hearing in Austin, the committee held a hearing in Lubbock on Friday, June 10, where CASA of the South Plains Executive Director Jennie Hill was invited to testify. See this newspaper story on the hearing.

The committee is expected to hold additional hearings elsewhere in Texas, and CASA programs will likely be asked to testify on issues and problems in their service areas – so stay tuned for more information.
