Trauma-Informed Care

Trauma-Informed Care includes an awareness of the prevalence of trauma; an understanding of the impact of trauma on physical, emotional, behavioral and mental health; an understanding that current service systems can retraumatize children and families, and a commitment to creating services and environments that heal and do not retraumatize.

Trauma-Informed Care follows five Guiding Principles that serve as a framework for how service providers and systems of care can work to reduce the likelihood of retraumatization. The five Guiding Principles are: safety, choice, collaboration, trustworthiness and empowerment.

Trust-Based Relational
Intervention (TBRI®)

TBRI® is an attachment-based, trauma-informed intervention that is designed to meet the complex needs of vulnerable children. It is a proven method for enriching the lives of children, adolescents and their families by helping learners understand the brain science behind trauma, attachment and healing, and learn practical skills to help children build trust and positive behaviors.

On our Learning Center, we offer 8 hours of video-based training in TBRI® which counts as Continuing Education for CASA volunteers.

Workforce Survey on Trauma-Informed Care within the Child Welfare System in Texas

With funding from the Children’s Commission, Texas CASA, in partnership with Cenpatico, the Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS), Texas Network of Youth Services and others, developed a survey that was distributed to child welfare stakeholders across the state.

Texas CASA has compiled our findings into a report that includes an analysis of the survey responses, plus recommendations on how to create a more trauma-informed child welfare system.
