The WHIT Program

What is The WHIT Program Inc?

WHIT stands for, Weekly Hands-on Independent Tutoring. They are a non-profit organization that provides FREE tutoring to children in the foster care system in Texas. Their services are available to any child in foster care or FBSS throughout the state of Texas. As long as the child does not have a diagnosed learning disability and or in Special Education, then they can provide their services.

They have over 160 children across Texas currently receiving their free tutoring services! They have already been working with numerous Texas Judges, DFPS Regions, Community-Based Care organizations, universities, and Independent School Districts to get the word out about their free program.

WHAT DO TUTORING SESSIONS LOOK LIKE

Tutoring sessions occur weekly for one hour and can take place in person or virtually, depending on where the child is placed.

If a child is placed in an area where they don’t have face to face tutors available, then they match the child with one of their tutors virtually. Virtual tutoring works exceptionally well as it is one on one with the child and tutor for one hour a week to work on getting them up to grade level. They have had many success stories of children that have received our virtual tutoring!

If the child is placed in a place where they do have face to face tutors, then the tutoring takes place in person at the local library or university library; they have to have sessions at places that have cameras to follow our policies and procedures. Their tutors are not allowed to transport the foster child nor conduct tutoring in the foster home. The foster/kinship placement brings the child to sessions.
