The WHIT Program (Weekly Hands-on Independent Tutoring) Expansion of Services
The WHIT Program (Free Weekly Hands-on Independent Tutoring) has recently grown its partnerships with Texas universities and now has volunteers for in-person tutoring from 25 different campuses! For a list of universities they collaborate with, check out their Leader Board: WHIT Program and scroll down.
In addition to free in-person tutoring, the WHIT Program also provides free virtual tutoring. Their service map spans the entire state of Texas! They have supported children in every DFPS region, serving more than 90 counties, and growing. This statewide reach is possible through a combination of in-person tutoring and one-on-one virtual tutoring. When an in-person tutor is not available in a specific area, the child is matched with a dedicated virtual tutor.
What is The WHIT Program Inc?
WHIT stands for, Weekly Hands-on Independent Tutoring. They are a non-profit organization that provides FREE tutoring to children in the foster care system in Texas. Their services are available to any child in foster care or Family-Based Safety Services (FBSS) throughout the state of Texas. As long as the child does not have a diagnosed learning disability, and or in Special Education, then they can provide services.
They have over 160 children across Texas currently receiving their free tutoring services! They have already been working with numerous Texas Judges, DFPS Regions, Community-Based Care organizations, universities and Independent School Districts to get the word out about their free program.
What Do Tutoring Sessions Look Like?
Tutoring sessions occur weekly for one hour and can take place in person or virtually, depending on where the child is placed.
If a child is placed in an area where they don’t have face to face tutors available, then they match the child with one of their tutors virtually. Virtual tutoring works exceptionally well as it is one on one with the child and tutor for one hour a week to work on getting them up to grade level. They have had many success stories of children that have received virtual tutoring!
Local CASA programs are welcome to fill out this WHIT Student Referral Form to request tutoring services.
